Influenced by research into the early history of electric light, particularly in relation to film and architecture, Katherine Starczewski’s practice is based around experiments with the materiality and illusionary qualities of artificial light. My work also seeks to question the uncertainty of perception and the construction of the filmic and photographic image, particularly in relation to the construction and representation of gender. Often the works are made through processes of abstraction and feedback, and span video, installation, photography and sculpture.
